Maddow grew up in the San Francisco Bay area with her father, an attorney, and her mother, a school administrator. She attended Stanford University, earning a B.A. in public policy in 1994. As a senior, she won the John Gardner Fellowship award for public service, which provided her with a stipend, mentorship, and a placement in a public service organization for 10 months. During this period, Maddow worked with the AIDS Legal Referral Panel in San Francisco and became an advocate for prison AIDS issues. While in college, she came out as a lesbian by posting an open letter throughout her dormitory. In 1995, she attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar and received a doctorate (D.Phil.) in politics in 2001 with a dissertation titled “HIV/AIDS and Health Care Reform in British and American Prisons.”

Before completing her degree, Maddow returned to the United States and settled in western Massachusetts, resuming her AIDS prison advocacy and holding various jobs while finishing her dissertation. She then answered an open audition call for a “news girl” on a morning radio show in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and won the position. After about a year as the host’s sidekick, she got her own show at a Northampton station. She completed her dissertation and was awarded her doctorate. In 2004, while working as a morning DJ, a friend shared tapes of her work with a host on the fledgling Air America liberal radio network.

Maddow was hired immediately as a news reader and soon cohosted Unfiltered with Lizz Winstead and Chuck D. After the show was canceled in 2005, she was given her own show, which aired for one hour and later two. She quickly gained a reputation as a fair-minded, issue-oriented “policy wonk.” While continuing her radio work, she began appearing on conservative Tucker Carlson’s MSNBC talk program in 2005. Engaging in polite but often heated debates with Carlson, she solidified her image as a formidable debater.

Over the next few years, Maddow made frequent guest appearances on other cable news and discussion shows as a representative of the political left. Following the cancellation of Carlson’s show in 2008, she became a frequent guest host on Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. Her popularity with the audience grew, and soon she was given her own show.

The Rachel Maddow Show, a blend of news, opinion, and entertainment, premiered on MSNBC on September 8, 2008. That year, she also appeared regularly as a panelist on MSNBC’s presidential campaign show, Race for the White House, whose audio was simulcast on Air America. Her radio show ended with the closure of Air America in 2010. Maddow became known as a well-prepared and informed host who interviewed a wide range of guests from various fields, covering topics from comic books to economic policy. Despite her liberal stance, she was appreciated for her sense of humor and lack of bluster.

In 2012, Maddow published Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, examining U.S. military policy from the Vietnam War to the Afghanistan War. In 2019, she released Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth, arguing that the gas and oil industry was undermining democracy. Her next book, Bag Man: The Wild Crimes, Audacious Cover-Up, and Spectacular Downfall of a Brazen Crook in the White House (2020), co-written with Michael Yarvitz, was based on her podcast about Vice President Spiro Agnew, who resigned in 1973 amid federal indictments.
